POVERTY OF EDUCATION IN INDONESIA
One of the biggest problems that Indonesia has regarding education is the high number of school dropouts. With 2,5 million children in total, 600,000 of them being cases of elementary school dropouts and 1,9 million being middle school dropouts (UNICEF).
Economic reasons are the primary causes of these dropouts cases. A survey by the Pusat Studi Kependudukan dan Kebijakan Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted on a group of respondents from Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara found out that 47,3% of respondents claimed to drop out of school due to finances while another 31% dropped out as they need to help their parents earn money to support their family’s economy.
With the high number of school dropouts, these children will have difficulty finding decent employment due to their lack of education, causing them be trapped in this circle of poverty.
